Innocuous-seeming spike

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Do you know about the danger of innocuous-seeming spike? Spikelet`s seed — what is this, and why it is so terrible for our four-legged friends?

Many breeders know first-hand how dangerous an innocuous spike can be, while newbie owners may not even suspect it`s danger.

Green spikes do not pose any danger, but dried out, it becomes sharp and elastic. The dog, running through the dead woods, is in danger of returning from a walk with a trouble. Spikes are like fireworks. They can “shoot in different directions”, fall into the coat, skin, nose, ears, eyes and even into the gum between the teeth of your pet. They are very stiff and prickly; they cut through the skin of an animal, dig in like needles and begin to move under the skin, through the muscles...

How to protect your pet from this scourge!? "Forewarned is forearmed!"

You should examine your four-legged friend more often after a walk in the season of dry spikes, avoid walking in the dead woods, brush long hair after walks and observe the dog’s behavior: frequent sneezing, disturbing behavior (shakes his head, rubs his ear with his paw). These symptoms may indicate the presence of spikelet`s seed. Swelling and inflammation on the skin or between the toes should also be carefully examined in bright light.

In many cases, this seed remains invisible or you noticed it, but could not get it out. Do not keep it back - contact your vet immediately. It is possible to get the seed out in 90% of cases only by specialist with the help of surgery, sometimes under anesthesia.

Only care on your part can save your lovely friend.
